The ad that I have chosen for this assignment represents two kids standing in a classroom environment, both kids have one thing in common, theyre both holding an object in their hands. One of the kids is holding a surprise egg, whereas the other kid is holding a gun. I have seen this ad in one of my social media accounts. The advertisement is very compelling and regards to one of the main issues that people in United States face these days. I will be analyzing the sociological perspectives of gun violence and how gun control should change, and how guns are more dangerous than a surprise egg. In order to understand the sociological perspective of gun violence it is important to understand what the reason behind gun violence is. As one of the main key points in understanding its perspective is the socialization, which is how ones behavior is. The definition of term socialization refers to socializing agents which are mainly family, school, religious intuitions and the peer groups. (Caffrey, K. P. (2013). As the primary socialization group is the family. There are patterns where people get their beliefs and values from. Therefore, to understand why gun violence or any other violence occur it is important to consider the sociological factors of ones life. The criminal behaviors are learned, and socialization is what causes these behaviors as socialization is a process of learning and adapting. Furthermore, as the main goal of this ad is to portray how guns are more dangerous than the surprise eggs. The main goal is to differentiate what is dangerous and what is safe. One of the main issue in the year of 2018 have been the school shootings. School shooting have increased by a large number as the learning environment have become a dangerous place for students. I have researched the statistical number and correlations for most of the school shooting and the numbers indicate that there have been 23 school shooting starting from January to May of 2018. Which is equivalent to an average of one shooting per week according to CNN news. (Ahmed, S., Walker, C. 2018) So, what is the issue behind these numbers increasing is the question that can be interpreted by correlating the similarities between most of the shooters. Gender, could masculinity be one of the reasons for school shootings. As the statistical data indicates that all the shooters in the school shooting were male. Is there a certain pattern which would help us to understand how gender plays a role in these shootings? All social institutions and practices†education, marriage, law, the economy, fashion, health care, even baby names†are in some way tied up with gender norms and expectations.( Conley, D. (2017).pg. 290) It is a social norm for men to be more dominant and violent. It seems like the violence is one of the identities given to all men as both genders have norms. One of the norms for men is to be more dominant, are the gender roles one of the issues or reasons which cause violence, and specifically school shootings, where guns are used as the weapon. What can we predict about the future of education institutions, would gun violence prevent people from getting the proper education, as education plays an important role in our lives. The amount of education we get these days can contribute to a better future and a better job. By looking at this ad I was thinking about schools and the victims of school shootings, would the people who were victims of a school shooting be traumatized to go back to school be fearing that these events can occur more than once. Would school shooting be one of the concerns of people that dont continue school? Probably not, as its still not to the point where students are afraid to attend school. Yet, if no action is taken and fi gun control and laws regarding guns dont change. The gun violence will be one of main sociological issue people face in the era. Looking at statics and the races for most of the shooters, there are strong patterns which will lead to solid assumptions that most school shooting are c onvicted by white male people or specifically and more often by white male students. Who are going through serious psychological and mainly sociological issues. As a school is a social platform. People who have problems regarding school have sociological issues, because educational institutions are one of the sources for socialization. One of the scholarly articles that I have found on school shooting is by Jorge Celis, as he is looking at the patterns of school shooting and gun violence. He mentions that societal factors impact school shooting, as I mentioned from the from my other source that socialization is one of the societal factor, in addition masculinity according to Celis is the other societal factor which leads to school shooting. He finds schools to be the social entities which are responsible for internalizations of social values (C., J. 2015) Furthermore he shares a geographical distribution of school shooting from 2013 where Unites States hold the first place. Another interesting fact that I have learned from this article is that school shooters are the good students with good grades, as their grades drops as these students are exposed stressors for the most of their life. Historically we have known that men are physically stronger, could the school shooting be a representation of strength. As most o f us know the school shooters are mostly victims of bullying could the act of shooting up a place be a representation of strength? From scholar article one and from the second article we can initiate that there are two factors to the sociological perspective of gun violence and mainly to the school shooting one of which is the socialization which is one of the main resources in our life, as the way we socialize can change who we are and who we become, another sociological perspective is masculinity. Would carrying a gun around make you look more masculine as it is a social norm for men to portray their masculinity in public. My main question is, have any of us seen a woman carrying a gun around with her at her waist? I personally never seen a woman carrying guns around however there have been many times where I see men carrying guns around. As masculinity is something that needs to be shown to be proven, the violence is learned. Scholarly article by sociologist from University of Montana assumes that when a behavior is reinforced many times it will increase in frequency. Therefore, according to Krista Caffrey violence is learned and it starts from the childhood. Studies indicate that early intervention, both in the classroom with disruptive and violent children and in the home with emotionally and physically abusive families, can result in a reduction in adult criminal behavior (Caffrey, K. P. (2013). As I mentioned before the violence is learned but does the increase in number of school shooting indicates a new norm. I dont specifically want to call this a social norm, but it seems like throughout the first five months of 2018 the number of school shooting have increased. Does this mean students learn violence through media? How does social media portray school shootings, and does it encourage others to get into this act of violence is a great sociological question. As I am trying to interpret the sociological message in the ad, I might have gone very deep in to the topic of gun violence. The sociological message in the advertisement is to show how the two objects that are being help by these two innocent kids are both dangerous for these kids however only one of them is banned which is the surprise egg, which contains a toy that is found to be hazardous for kids. Kids seem to get killed by the hazardous toys that the surprise eggs have inside them. But the main problem is that the girl in the ad holding the gun shows that theres something more dangerous that is killing kids these days as the shootings have increased drastically in the past years in the United states mainly. Does that mean something needs to be done as the laws on gun control should be changed and more actions which will prevent these shootings especially school shootings as theyre the most common type of shootings that happen these days. In conclusion, my main goal was to interpret the sociological messages given in the advertisement which has two kids holding two different objects, a gun and a surprise egg. As I concentrated on interpreting the sociological perspectives of violence and school shootings which are the act where guns are the main weapon. I used two perspectives of which one was the socialization and masculinity according to the second scholarly resource that I used for this paper. The school shooting has increased in the year of 2018, as the numbers increase I have a strong assumption that the number will continue increasing as it has been a norm for the school shooting to be very common. The way social media portrays them, and the way people feel about these violence acts should change. People need to be aware that this is a big issue and socialization as the main reason should be improved as kids should be given lessons if needed to attain better sociological atmosphere. Yet it is sometimes difficult to control ones actions as the main socialization factors is the family, as according to my first scholarly sources the violence is learned. Following our needs assessment of trying to improve a few areas of education (primary areas such as English, Math) with the children at the orphanage, the second strand of community education was attempted. The second strand of Community Education involved providing compensatory education to the children. Some of the children in the orphanage were unfortunate enough to not have been enrolled in a school until at an age where they were way behind the curriculum. Very few of them seemed to be working at their suited level in their respective schools. To compensate for this we divided ourselves among the twenty eight children to attempt to teach them Math and English. Fortunately, we had two teachers in our group who structured lessons for some of the children while the others were given one on one tutoring based on school work they had trouble understanding. In this case, the community we are talking about is the orphanage. Community development places emphasis on promoting self-help through education. Our process of community development began with our group firstly visiting the orphanage and speaking to the founder and the children after introducing ourselves. Next as part of the process, we carried out a needs assessment based on our meeting at the orphanage where everyone had an input to say what they wanted from our group. And based on most of them said we decided upon the enhancement of their numeracy and literacy skills. One characteristic of Community Development is that though the development is concerned with all members of a community, not all of them will be willing to participate. This was experienced at the orphanage where the older boys, though at times we got them to participate, would rather help the workers in the yard rather than let us work with them. Community development, instead of just dealing with one specific aspect, it entails developing total community life and addressing all its needs. Though we were not required to address all their needs, we attempted to address literacy and numeracy. We also did crafts to improve their creativity. In the process of doing these planned educational activities, there were times when we taught them unplanned lessons that were valuable to them such as helping them to realize that to be able to do things they must first give it a try and also when we noticed that one boy was not able to use a scissors we attempted to improve his motor skills with a simple task of cutting drawn lines. In building on the community assets, we found that the orphanage had the required materials (e. g. textbooks) so all that our group needed to do was make ourselves useful to the children. With increasing the skills of the children, we taught them literacy and numeracy which are two basic things that will benefit them in the future and for a lifetime We also baked cakes and biscuits with them attempting to teach them to cooperate among themselves. This cooperation was observed when they let each other take turns at making the biscuits. With the crafts we did with them we challenged their creativity and patience. With the pep talks we had with some of the children we observed that the talks helped to build some confidence in some of the children. Along with the community education and community development, understanding the children we were working with was very important. The backgrounds of the members in our group were very different from the experiences of the children. We needed to understand why they might behave a certain way. The founder of the orphanage helped us in this way by telling us about the children and their experiences before they came to the orphanage. We had an idea of what kind of behavior to expect from the children. We understood that it would at times get difficult but we were not to judge them. We understood why they behaved in certain ways and we were mostly successful at dealing appropriately with their behavior. We made it a point to not appear in anyway better than they were and that we were there not only for our own means but also so that we can be of service to them and in turn help improve themselves. Community Profile The Bless the Children Home Orphanage is a registered non profitable organization whose mission is to help all needy children of different races, religion and background; to feed, house, clothe and give them an education. Founded by Mr. amp; Mrs. Surujpaul, the Home was opened on October 1st, 2008 and is located at Industry, East Coast Demerara. The Orphanage to date consists of twenty eight children, boys, girls, of which are Indians, and –blacks, -Amerindian, mixed race. Their ages range from three years to seventeen years old. These children share a common history of coming from improvised communities with minute or no rudimentary education. Some were sexually abused or physically abused, while some were rejected and neglected. And some parents have died, leaving no legal guardian to take care of them. All the children from four years and above attend school; the ones 4-6 yrs old attend the Plindola Nursery School, and the ones from 6 years to twelve years old attend the Graham’s Hall Primary School. The others above 12 yrs attend the Cummings Lodge Secondary School, and Plaisance Community High School. The children although from different race, creed or color are Christianized once they become a member of the orphanage. They are taught the principles of the bible daily. They have daily morning devotion and in the evening they are taught stories from the bible along with their evening prayers. Every Sunday it is compulsory for them to attend church services. The children are taught to live a ‘Christian life’, and sing praises to their God. The children are disciplined or punished when they have don’t abide by the rules of the Orphanage. Their punishment takes different measures, depending how severe they bend the rules. For misbehavior, they are not given snacks. Other forms of punishment include going to their rooms (quiet time) and not allowing them to participate in any recreational activities they enjoy doing. Apart from the Christian principles that the children must follow, there is also a daily schedule hat they must abide with. This schedule is a daily time table that delegates each child of what minor chores they are expected to do. They wash their clothes and clean their rooms and their surrounding, help in the kitchen to wash the dishes and even to prepare meals. Apart from minor chores, they children have schedule time for their meals, schoo l/homework time, recreation time, sleep time, etc. Given the children’s abusive and neglected background before they came to the Orphanage, they have been psychologically scared, some displaying deviant behaviours, mood swings etc. Mr. Surujpaul is a qualified Pastor and prays for the children along with his church members so their hurt and gruesome pain can be alleviated. Professional help is also afforded to them as well. Medical Doctors, Social Workers and a Psychologist volunteer their services towards the cause. Apart from that, there are routine visits from the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security Social Work Department. The children are well kept and fed; no one seems to be in lack of anything materially. Every child has got a bank account for themselves. Through donated funds and their pocket piece, they are taught to save. At the age of eighteen, it is expected that they are in the field of employment and move on with their lives. (i. e. they move out from the Orphanage) The children work together, play together, especially among their own age groups. They share a special bond of being one big happy family that care for each other. Petty fights are settled among themselves and the bigger ones look out for the smaller ones. It’s truly amazing to find such unity among the children. They are also very friendly children and are always open to guests and visitors that arrive at the orphanage. The building of the Orphanage is relatively new; the place they call ‘home’ is well maintained. All fixtures and light are well updated. And everything inside their home is well packed and kept in order. The Orphanage apart from its owners has six staff-Manager, Cook, Three House parents, and a Driver. The Orphanage also has a part time security guard to ensure the safety of this community. The Orphanage’s main source of income is fundamentally obtained through donations from friends and families, churches, stake holders abroad, especially from the USA and Canada, and fund raising activities. Food items are donated almost monthly by local supermarkets and grocery stores. Also families and friends and church members donate lunch, dinner and snacks regularly to the children. The children’s clothing are also donated through same means. Some children are also sponsored monthly by individuals/families who support the â€Å"Sponsor a child for $50 USD a month† program. Community needs On July 18th, 2012, our group of six members visited the Orphanage. We were given a very warm welcome by the children, especially the younger ones. Each one of us introduced ourselves to them and indicated our purpose of being with them. Then each child was also given the opportunity to introduce themselves and indicate their hobbies. What we realized is that most of the children liked to sing, and play cricket, a few liked drawing and watching cartoons. As part of our needs assessment process we directly asked the children of what help we may provide to them. They all indicated they were poor in basic Math and English skills. Eighty percent of the children above seven years old indicated they wanted to learn to read, spell, and improve of their grammar skills, while the remaining twenty wanted help in their mathematics skills. The children below the age of six asked to sing and play with them. Having made direct contact with the children about their needs, we decided to arrange them into three groups according to their ages and they were asked to name their respective groups. The 3-6 yrs old were named the Superheroes, the 7-12 yrs old were known as the White Diamonds and the teenagers, 13 -16 yrs old named themselves the Untouchables. With the knowledge and expertise of two trained teachers who we were fortunate to have had in our group, an activity planner was organized with a list of topics to complete with the children with a given amount of time (thirty two hours) for a six and a half week period ( 5 hour per week- two days a week). Since the children were divided into three groups, two of us were responsible for each group. Apart from the planned numeracy and literacy skills we planned for them, we also made it fun through games and crafts. We also decided to teach them a craft skill of baking banana oats cookies and baking a cake. We the group members believe that having an education is a form of empowering the minds of our youths today in accordance with Convention on Rights of a Child which came into force Sep, 02nd, 1990. Article 29 1. States Parties agree that the education of the child shall be directed to: (a) The development of the childs personality, talents and mental and physical abilities to their fullest potential; (b) The development of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, and for the principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations; (c) The development of respect for the childs parents, his or her own cultural identity, language and values, for the national values of the country in which the child is living, the country from which he or she may originate, and for civilizations different from his or her own; (d) The preparation of the child for responsible life in a free society, in the spirit of understanding, peace, tolerance, equality of sexes, and friendship among all peoples, ethnic, national and religious groups and persons of indigenous origin; Community resources The dining room was transformed into a classroom set up for the three groups. The available textbooks that the ch ildren used in their schools were a great asset to helping us complete the below mentioned program. We the group members used our primary and secondary school books that we found relevant to helping the children with their educational activities. Our group donated the necessary exercise books, pencils, pens, craft paper, paint for the basic numeracy and literacy activities and the ingredients for the baking endeavor. Thomas More

Thomas More was a very devoted Catholic who was put on trial for treason in the 16th century, because he refused to acknowledge Henry VIII as the "ruler of the world, above everyone, including the Church" (Mansouri 04/04/00). He was declared guilty of reason, for which he was beheaded. However, twenty years before his death he wrote a novel titled "Utopia". The word "utopia" means a good, non-existent place. In other words, Thomas More wrote the novel "Utopia" to portray his idea of an ideal society that would never come into being. Thomas More's "Utopia" serves as a response to the ideal society depicted in Plato's "Republic", in which he further formulates Plato's most ingenious ideas. (Mansouri 04/04/00) Both Thomas More's "Utopia" and Plato's "Republic" contain a description of the perfect state concerning class structure, the role of education, and the nature of governing. However, they do so for different reasons. Thomas More wrote "Utopia" to form "the most civilized nation of the world" (Mansouri 04/04/00). Whereas Plato, who lived during a period of Humanism, wrote the "Republic" as a philosophical work. Plato was not interested in defining the perfect state; rather, he uses the state as a "large-scale picture of the soul", in his search for the perfect soul (Mansouri 04/04/00). The Utopian Society is "almost egalitarian" (Mansouri 04/04/00). However, Plato's Republic is a state of three classes that consist of a guardian class, an auxiliary class, and the masses of people. More focuses on Plato's guardian class in constructing the Utopian Society. The guardian class lives together in camps, sharing their property, and their earnings from the society as a whole. Global Climate Change Essay Climate change pertains to the deviation in the global temperature through a course of time. It portrays the alterations in the standard condition of the atmosphere for a particular period of time, extending from years to centuries. It has been determined that climate change is the result of various courses, both internal and external with respect to the planet. The phrase climate change has lately been applied to issues of environmental planning strategies and approximately 90 – 95% of this variation has been attributed to human activities. This human derived concept has then been categorized as anthropogenic climate change and the media has then presented this phenomenon as global warming. Other non-governmental agencies have also referred to this occurrence as climate variability. In this paper, climate change and global warming will be used interchangeably to refer to the increase in temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere. DETAILS OF CLIMATE CHANGE Climate change pertains to the increase in temperature of the atmosphere based on the entrapment of gases that are emitted from activities on the surface of the earth. The increase in temperature is a direct result of the greenhouse effect, which involves heat that originated from the sun, which is entrapped within the atmosphere due to several factors. Scientists have determined that the atmosphere’s temperature has increased since the industrial revolution, which has maximized the use of chemicals in manufacturing various kinds of materials in industry. There are four principal gases that have been identified to be primarily responsible for the onset of global warming. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is accountable for approximately half of the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere (Pearson and Palmer, 2000). This gas is a by-product of fossil fuel combustion, which involves burning of coal, natural gas and oil. It is also generated from deforestation activities, which have increased for expansion of industrialization areas. Trees utilize carbon dioxide in their photosynthetic reactions, but it there are fewer trees in the environment, less CO2 is removed from the atmosphere, leaving the environment with excess amounts of CO2. Another gas that has been determined to be responsible for global warming is chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which are the primary constituent of plastics and aerosols, as well as refrigerants in air conditioners. Chlorofluorocarbons make up approximately 25% of the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Thirdly, methane gas (CH4), which comprises approximately 12% of the greenhouse gases, is also accountable for global warming. Methane gas is released during the decay of organic matter, as well as in the stomachs of cattle, sheep and termites, yet, most of the gas is currently generated by industrial companies. Lastly, nitrous oxide (N2O) is responsible for approximately 6% of the greenhouse gases. It is a by-product of industries, as well as nitrogen fertilizers, volcanic eruptions and livestock manure. Should the greenhouse effect be absent, any biological species would not be able to survive through the harsh cold temperature of the Earth. However, the accumulated effect of human activity during the last few centuries has affected the greenhouse phenomenon, resulting in a significant increase in the concentration of particular gases. This increase in concentration subsequently influenced the atmospheric temperature to increase. The first greenhouse gas that was identified is water vapor. This gas comprises around 36 to 70% of the total greenhouse effect. Another greenhouse gas that was recognized is carbon dioxide which makes up 9 to 26% of the total atmospheric complex. Approximately 4 to 9% of the atmosphere is also composed of methane gas, while around 4 to 9% is made up of ozone. Historical atmospheric analysis has shown that the amount of these gases has increase by almost 75% since the 18th century industrial era. Geological research has indicated that the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has reached its highest concentration in the last 20 million years of the Earth’s existence.

Is love at first sight possible? Is love and discontent possible at first sight? How can two people that have such discontent for each other fall in love? In the book and film Twilight Bella Swan and Edward Cullen both certainly did. They were drawn to each by curiosity and beauty. Curiosity drew them together, but they did not like each other very much in the beginning. They both ended up having a deep longing to be with one another and could not imagine being apart. In the book and movie Twilight, Bella was a girl who moved from hot sunny Arizona to basically a dark and rainy place called Forks Washington. She moved there because her mother and her mother’s new husband went on the road for a while. She didn’t like forks, in fact she hated it. But she moved there none the less allowing her mother to have time alone with her new husband. She moved with her father to Forks whose name was Charlie. She hadn’t gone to Forks for a visit since she was 14. The first time she saw Edward Cullen was in the cafeteria at school. He had reddish brown hair. He was beautiful and perfect. He had two â€Å"foster† sisters and two â€Å"foster† brothers as well who were perfect She couldn’t help to look at him more than once but did not want to appear that she was starring. He looked at her with somewhat of a smile on his face and then with a look of curiosity. The second time she saw Edward was quite different. It was biology class when Bella saw Edward next. She was seated next to him by the teacher. Edward looked at her with hostility and anger. He continued to stare at her the entire length of the class. His eyes were black. He appeared as though something smelled bad so Bella discreetly sniffed herself thinking perhaps she smelled badly. Feeling uncomfortable, she hid behind her hair trying not to look at him for the remainder of the class. Before class was over she looked at him one last time. In Gladiator the main character seeks vengeance for the loss of his son and wife, as does Hamlet for the loss of his father. The vengeance sought out in Gladiator is a result of treachery involving loved ones as is the vengeance sought out in hamlet. Finally, both Hamlet and Gladiator are examples of dramatic tragedy where the main character ends up dying. Along with these similarities there are also many differences. There are the difference in characters, the difference in when these stories take place, and the difference in the endings. By comparing and contrasting a modern tragedy, Gladiator, with an ancient tragedy, Hamlet, it shows why dramatic tragedy has survived throughout the ages. In the beginning of Hamlet King Hamlet’s ghost pays a visit to Prince Hamlet. The ghost tells Hamlet that while â€Å"sleeping in [his] orchard, a serpent stung [him].† He then tells Hamlet â€Å"the serpent that did sting thy father’s life now wears his crown.† Hamlet, who already suspected his father’s death to be murder, is furious upon learning that it was not only murder, it was his father’s uncle that committed the act of treachery. In a rage of fury Hamlet swears to the ghost of his father that he will seek vengeance on Claudius, for his sake and that of his father’s. This is very similar in Gladiator when Commodus kills his father, the Roman Emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Maximus, a Roman General, was very close with Marcus who told Maximus â€Å"he [was] the son [he] should have had†¦Ã¢â‚¬  and wanted Maximus to carry on as Emperor instead of his son Commodus. Maximus seeks vengeance on Commodus not only for murdering Marcus, but also because he murdered Maximum’s wife and eight-year-old son. In both cases Claudius and Commadus wanted to reign, to have power; in both cases they were not meant to have it. Hamlet was the â€Å"heir to the throne,† and Aurelius wanted Maximus to take his place as emperor. Both Claudius and Commadus wanted power so badly, that they killed in order to get what they wanted. ———————————————————————————————– These stories are both similar in treachery because the men that they had trusted and confided in had murdered them. Claudius betrayed his brother by poisoning him then marrying his wife; Commadus betrayed his father by suffocating him after learning Aurelius did not want his only son to rule. Another example of the similarities between these two stories is that Hamlet and Maximus both had to change themselves in order to seek their vengeance. They both went from being looked highly upon in society, to being looked down on. Hamlet fooled people by acting like he was crazy. This way his stepfather could not suspect Hamlet of knowing that he had murdered Hamlet’s father. Following the death of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, Maximus finds himself an enemy of the new Emperor Commadus. He is reduced to the status of a slave and eventually falls into the hands of a gladiator trainer. He then begins to forge a new life for himself as a ruthless killing machine that entertains the fickle crowd, as the behind-the-scenes politics of second century Rome stand to make him a hero of the people. By fighting as a gladiator he seek revenge on the new Emperor of Rome. Hamlet and Maximus want to avenge those who have been killed so badly that they undergo obstacles with courage and their heads high as well as they both risking their lives for what they believe in. Throughout Hamlet, one might also notice they have taken similar ideas from â€Å"Hamlet† and used them to help make their story a (better one). Towards the beginning of the story before Aurelius is killed, Commadus tells the senators that â€Å"they’ll be pouring honey potion in people’s ears†¦Ã¢â‚¬  in order to make the country republic. What is similar is that Claudius poured â€Å"potion† into King Hamlet’s ear, in order to kill him. Another moment in Gladiator that makes you think of Hamlet is towards the end when Commodus tells his nephew, Lucius, about their ancestor Emperor Claudius. He tells Lucius that â€Å"[Claudius] was betrayed! By those closest to him†¦Ã¢â‚¬  This is similar to Hamlet because Gertrude betrays Claudius and Lucilla betrays Commodus. This is ironic because both Claudius and Commodus betrayed loved ones in order to gain power. Along with these similarities there are also many differences. For instance Hamlet was born a prince while Maximus was the general for Aurelius’s army. Also King Hamlet was killed by his brother and Aurelius was killed by his son, and Hamlet’s mother dies in the end while Commadus’ sister survives. The main difference, however, is in the end of these stories. In Hamlet, he never lets on to Claudius that he knows how his father died. Instead he acts as if he is crazy. It is not until a theatrical group re-enacts how King Hamlet was murdered that Claudius realises that Hamlet knows†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦. In Gladiator, as soon as Maximus sees Commadus in the Coliseum he tells Commadus that he will kill him for the murders he has committed. In the end Maximus kills Commadus while all of Rome watches this form of â€Å"entertainment† take place. Maximus, badly wounded dies soon after giving the Empire to the senators to become republic. Even though these two stories have their differences, they are both dramatic tragedies. The emotion that a tragic character portrays helps us to relate and become more entranced with the story. Up until the heroes have died they have got to know that person. They have understood the character, their motivations, and reactions. When they die, they have died courageously for what they have believed in. In life we are always looking for an â€Å"idol† hero-worshipping. Our fascination for dramatic tragedy has survived throughout the years because man in his inadequate ways needs to have someone whom they can look up to, so to speak. Lets face it we are often intrigued by human suffering especially if it is for noble causes. People often carry the same beliefs as these leaders, and fully support them. These heroes are the epitome of what we believe in, willing to die for causes. We love to believe that someone is willing to go to that extent for our beliefs. Their deaths often accomplish what could not be done while they were alive. This is illustrated when Maximus says â€Å"what we do in life, echoes in eternity.† The similarities and differences in Hamlet and Gladiator are what help make dramatic tragedies survive through the ages. However, it is not only in movies or plays, it is also in real life. These heroes have died for what they believed in and have made a difference in our lives. It gives us strength to face the world we live in today, and it gives us understanding as to why these leaders are fighting. This is why dramatic tragedies have survived throughout the ages, and this is why they will continue to survive for years to come.

The Roaring Twenties And Progressivism - 2694 Words

The Roaring Twenties, the Jazz Age, the Age of Intolerance, and the Age of Wonderful Nonsense are all the names given to the 1920s era (Roaring). People flocked to cities to be part of this great industrial boom that was taking place. The 1920s was a period of economic prosperity and glamor, but in time, the glitter of the era would be brushed away to expose the grime that lay just below the surface (Roaring). The people responsible for this great reveal were called Progressives. The Roaring Twenties cannot exist without Progressivism. An ideal example of the relationship between the Roaring Twenties and Progressivism is found in two novels, Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. In approximately 515 pages combined, the entire era is put on display. The Great Gatsby shows the charm and fortune associated with the Roaring Twenties, and The Jungle shows the corrupt and monopolistic features of the era. Mutually, these novels provide a real istic window for future generations to look back in time, even though both are entirely fiction, and see how society used to be. They coexisted just as The Roaring Twenties coexisted with Progressivism, and how the flappers and millionaires coexisted with the immigrants. However, the authors had quite opposing purposes in mind for what their novels would accomplish in their lifetime, or what they would symbolize to future generations.
